@trailandale Yeah kickers sucked major shitballs in those days. It wasnt that uncommon for them to miss extra points. How about Butkus’ crunch at 7:33? Took his very soul out.

    @peterburd ‘Da Bears’

@hermanglimsher Douglas wore #14 in 1969. i had to check on pro football reference to be sure. I thought that he wore #10 throughout his career.

Funny how the announcer says the final Hail Mary “almost worked”…when the pass only got to the 15 yard-line. Even if completed it wouldn’t have helped.

Thanks for posting this….great footage and two classic Butkus tackles. Amazing that a team with two future Hall of Fame players goes 1-13, but nearly beat a team that went to the NFL Championship game. Rare footage of a Percival FG, as he went 8 for 21 that year.

@sportsmediaamerica The Bears beat the 1-13 Steelers for their only win. They then lost a coin flip for the right to draft Terry Bradshaw. Had they lost that game, they would have been winless, and Bradshaw would have been a Bear.

  7. sportsmediaamerica says:

Bobby Douglass, yet another lousy Big 12 QB (Kansas). The running dimension he brought was kinda cool, a la the Wildcat, but the Bears sucked in his years. They were 1-13 the year of this game.

    Dang! Bears lost!!

Man. Thanks for posting this, BEERZGOOD5. Great stuff. I’m a Viking fan, and wish somebody posted some Vike stuff like this. Love It!!!

The 1970 season was the last season the Bears played at Wrigley. In the 1970 home opener against the Eagles, the Bears played at Dyche Stadium where Northwestern played.

  11. shunique27 says:

Was this there last year at wrigley?

  12. IowaRocker1 says:

Douglas wore #14 the first year in Chicago then switched to #10 in 1970. FWIW

  13. FrsBigeasy says:

The Browns had some great teams in the 1960′s. What happened in 70′s?

  14. BEERZGOOD5 says:

Yes was Douglass, although someone else may have come in.

  15. hermanglimsher says:

Is the Bears quarterback Bobby Douglass?

I always though he was number 10.

  16. jamezpackerfan says:

The Bears had very good players like Gale Sayers and of course Butkus but they did not win much games at this time. The Browns at this time were always good.

  17. MDSJR67 says:

Doug Atkins was with the New Orleans Saints from 1967-1969.

  18. Coganboy says:

Damn right. There is no one who will ever come close to Butkus. We’ll argue over the greatest QB, RB, DB, but there will never be a MLB that can compare to Dick Butkus.

  19. BEERZGOOD5 says:

People talk about Ray Lewis and these LB’s come and go, but one standard remains: Butkus.

  20. Coganboy says:

This game is proof on how dominant Butkus is. I don’t think the Browns have run up the middle once on any plays. They know he’ll take them out!

  21. Coganboy says:

Decent player, but the real good DE the Bears had was Doug Atkins

  22. Coganboy says:

Allen???? I have to politely disagree man. That guy would have ruined the Bears. He didn’t believe in drafting or anything. The Bears would have had a team filled with 33 and older guys.

  23. VolumedMusicMan says:

I agree with you, I hate to say “what if”… but if George Allen had taken over the Bears head coaching job… OMG! He would’ve build around Sayers and Butkus … and lord knows what could’ve happened. Unfortunately, Allen didn’t see eye to eye with Halas over talent and strategy and resigned.

  24. generationll says:

Doug Buffone is on Chicago sportstalk radio 670.The Bears were pretty lousy 40 years ago.Butkus and Sayers played only one winning team during their careers.

    what about o’bradovich ?
